Some time ago me and creative have started a new project with bash and kommander script to provide a converter with nice speed and with many features like(for supported devices see here http://www.nowardev.netsons.org/?q=node/2) :

-mencoder gui (almost finished to do : adding preset )
-ffmpeg gui (almost finished some stupid problem to fix)
-ffmpeg2theora gui (finished some errror to fix for cropping)
-photo converter (finished to do : controlling script bash improve it and remove debug message from interface)
-text converter (done some errors on preserve layout)
-slide show with random effects (finished to do : controlling script bash improve it and remove debug message from interface)
(13 effects i think i don't remember well) with audio
-youtube downloader (finished some problem in merging stuff )
-full support for multicore cpu (finished)
-on fly command line editing , as fuoco tools "no war converter's" command lines can be modified from user directly so if one day ffmpeg or mencoder or or or programs will be modified you can still use that interface. (done)

Moreover you can even use mencoder interface if you programs use this sheme:

bla bla bla -o OUTPUT INPUT

and of corse for ffmpeg

bla bla bla -i INPUT OUTPUT

Basically it's a bash converter infact kommander script create only che command-line then start a bash script that converts your files
